WhatsApp, Viber, Telegram: which mobile messenger spends less traffic?

Italian operator SosTariffe studied the statistics of traffic consumption among the most popular messengers, finding out which one spends the least mobile MB.

In comparison involved seven messengers – WhatsApp, Telegram, Hangouts, Line, Viber, Facebook Messenger and Skype. Experts have been testing for hours using LTE. The results speak for themselves: Telegram consumes less of all traffic, while Skype and Facebook Messenger are recognized as the most uneconomical.

Testing was conducted in three modes of usage:

  • Small: 20 sent and 20 received messages sent and 5 received 2 photos.
  • Medium: 40 to 40 sent and received messages, 10 sent 5 received and the pictures.
  • High: 100 sent and 100 received messages 50 received 20 sent photos.

As can be seen from the table below, Telegram ahead of WhatsApp. The messenger of Pavel Durov is characterized by the low consumption of mobile traffic, with a score of 0.42 MB to 3.75 MB per 1 hour of usage, which is 35-40% less than that of Facebook messenger.

Other applications consume more than WhatsApp, which consumes from 0.65 to 6.23 MB per hour.

Services Hangouts and Line consume 6-18% more traffic compared to WhatsApp. Although in the active mode Line spent 5,85 MB and WhatsApp 6.23 MB.

Viber, Facebook Messenger and Skype were the most demanding of Internet traffic. So, Viber took 1,56 MB to 15.25 MB, and Facebook and Skype, from 2.05 MB to 22,22 MB per hour.
