Car companies continue to struggle with theft and subsequent resale of spare parts in the gray market. An interesting anti-theft system is offered by Toyota and Lexus – a unique marking of thousands of T-Mark / L-Mark microdots.
The anti-theft identifier will consist of 10,000 microdots located on a film with a thickness of one millimeter. At each point, a code different from the identification number (VIN) is encrypted.
This is how the dots with the code look under the microscope. Source: Toyota
In a code that can only be decrypted using special equipment or under a microscope (provided that it has to be separated from the car before that), all information about the vehicle will be stored: identification number, production date, equipment and even passenger compartment data.
How does this hinder car thieves?
All points are applied in certain places, and they are not always accessible to the eyes. Spraying can be compared to glitter nail polish, where glitter is the point with information. 10,000 points are applied in 25-30 places on the body and units. The application map changes every six months.
A clear step from Toyota and Lexus. The technology is not new. Back in Soviet times, car owners tried to somehow protect their cars from theft, and, in particular, one of the solutions was engraving on glass or side mirrors. Usually, either personal data or a VIN number was applied. Even now, sometimes you can find ads for the sale of such machines.

The application of the anti-theft identifier will not affect the price of the car, but, on the contrary, will give a small discount: up to 15% for the CASCO pole for “Theft” risk.
The first car in the Russian market that received the anti-theft ID L-Mark was Lexus ES. The company plans by July of this year to apply marking on the entire model range of cars.
