The locomotive called the iPhone continues to rush forward without any signs of slowing down. But before to discuss the future sales of “Apple” innovations, let’s take a closer look at the sales of Apple smartphones of previous generations.
In the first quarter of this year, Apple shipped 61 million iPhones, representing a growth of 40% compared to the same period last year. In the previous most profitable quarter attributable to new year and Christmas holidays, Apple sold 74,5 million iPhones, up 46% over the year.
Thus, in just six months, Apple managed to sell over 135 million smartphones. To help you better understand this figure, this is approximately equal to one iPhone sold for each inhabitant of Russia.
In this regard, today, increasingly, we hear from analysts and market observers predictions about “natural” decline in sales, as the iPhone has already peaked and grow nowhere else”. At first glance this makes sense, however, the statistics indicate that the upcoming iPhone refresh cycle associated with the release of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be the largest in Apple’s history. Thus, we can safely expect that in the next year Apple will break all records of sales of the iPhone.
Analyst Neil Cybart from Above Avalon, examining the base of active users of the iPhone, got some interesting results. He estimates the number of smartphones used today in Apple 475 million devices. This is an impressive number, but when Zibart leads the distribution models, the numbers become even more intriguing:
- iPhone 6: 85 million users
- iPhone 6 Plus: 35 million users
- iPhone 5s: 125 million users
- iPhone 5c: 50 million users
- iPhone 5: 80 million users
- iPhone 4s: 60 million users
- iPhone 4 and older: 40 million users
As can be seen, the most common model is the iPhone 5s, it’s used by 125 million people. Given that most users update their devices every two years, Apple can deal with the fact that 125 million owners of the “5s” will want to update their devices. Of course, the actual figure will be lower if you take into account those who have purchased the iPhone 5s with a contract in the last couple of months for $99.
Nevertheless, the iPhone 5s is just the tip of the iceberg. If you add the iPhone 5c, iPhone 4s and iPhone 4, we get 335 million users who will likely decide to upgrade to a new model as soon as the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be on store shelves.
While we have become accustomed to impressive starts Apple, yet never have so many enjoyed the “Apple” smartphones that will allow the new iPhone to reach unprecedented heights.
“Based on these data we can draw many interesting conclusions, but I am sure of one thing: looking at these figures, one cannot but agree with the words of Tim cook as saying that a significant number of iPhone owners will want to upgrade to the new model. Take also into account the increasing rates of Apple in China, and you will realize that the company can actually sell more than 250 million smartphones in 2016 (while 2015 may bring to the company about 230 million iPhone sold),” – said Zibart.
Some analysts forget that the iOS platform stronger “holds” the user than Android. In other words, iPhone owners during upgrade, likely to choose a smartphone from the same manufacturer at least more likely than owners of Android phones. Therefore, most owners of iPhone 5s and older devices updated to iPhone 6s.
As expected in the iPhone 6s new features, today it is known that the device will have a display with Force Touch feature already implemented in Apple Watch and MacBook. There are also rumors that the smartphone will have 12-megapixel camera, more durable display, 2 GB of RAM, the processor of new generation A9 and improved Touch ID functionality.
