Why no iPad app calculator

It’s hard to believe, but in the list of applications default on iPad is missing the calculator is an essential tool for calculations. This has historical reasons. As told by a former Apple employee, it’s all about the makeovers of the company’s founder Steve jobs.

“The story is quite funny. – Tangoshukudai wrote on the forum Reddit. – When you created the prototype of the iPad, then ported calculator with iOS. The application was stretched on the whole screen. At the stage of developing and testing the gadget it is included in the standard set of software and it was planned that it will be released in the final version of the iPad.

A month before the release of the tablet Steve jobs called Scott Forstall in his office and asked, “where’s the new design for the calculator? This looks terrible”. Forstall said, “what new design? The application should go like that.” To which jobs responded: No, we will have to remove it, we can’t release an app like this. Scott wanted to leave the calculator, but he knew that it will have to attract a team of designers to develop a new design. Due to time constraints the idea was abandoned: the application is simply removed from the operating system.

The calculator was not a priority app, so no one sat behind its creation.”

It should be noted that this is not the first time Steve jobs intervened in the development of a calculator for Apple products. During the creation of the first Macintosh, the founder of Apple several times rejected design Chris Espinosa, who eventually wrote the app, which Steve jobs had to draw the program interface.

Jobs worked with the app for 10 minutes, after which it design added on Mac. Following 15 years of user interface remained unchanged.
