On this week’s iPhone 6s and 6s Plus perfect in all respects. Except, perhaps, for a few moments, in which Apple chose to keep silent. New smartphones were heavier, thicker and wider than their predecessors. This unpleasant aspect has generated a lot of rumors and speculation. Something similar has happened in the past, when Apple introduced the iPad 3 and iPad mini 2 Retina display. In the same year, we again observed regression. What is this explanation?
If the increase in the width of iPhone 6s 0.2 mm is not very noticeable and is unlikely to affect the ease of use, the extra 20 grams will be felt. iPhone 6s weighs 143 g against 129g iPhone 6 and the ratio of the weight of the iPhone 6s Plus to the iPhone 6 Plus is described by the expression 192 172.
At first glance it may seem that the main role in this issue played a solid alloy of 7000 series aluminum, designed to make smartphones less prone to the infamous problem of deformation of the iPhone 6 Plus. The alloy is also used in models of Apple Watch Sport. However, it is not so simple.
The experiments showed that the iPhone 6s Plus heavier than the iPhone 6 Plus only 2 grams. And the metal “shell” iPhone 6s, paradoxically, easier and does that of the predecessor. But why did such a measurable increase in weight?
Blame the technology to determine the pressing force 3D Touch. To enable this feature, Apple engineers had to provide an extra layer of capacitive pressure sensors, which are placed under the display panel. This, in turn, has led to an increase in the thickness of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. 3D Touch increased weight of the smartphone 11%.
It is worth noting that in addition to an additional layer of capacitive pressure sensors and a new durable aluminum, the iPhone 6s will use new glass, which, according to Apple, thanks to a unique two-stage ion exchange process used in its manufacture, is the most durable glass for smartphones.
