The researchers were able to triple the density Retina displays

Every time it comes to resolution color display matrix, talking about the combination of three subpixels charge red, blue and green, physically resolution of any display up to three times higher technical. And, until recently, to overcome this barrier it was impossible. A group of researchers, which include experts from AU Optronics and JNC Petrochemical, has developed a technology that allows you to triple the density of LCD screens to reduce power consumption.

The secret of the new displays — in the absence of subpixels and color filters. All points are alternately lit red, blue and green, which currently has lighting. The switching is much faster than the current displays. In other words, mixing the three basic colors, through which is formed a full color image, new displays does not occur in spatial and time domain.

“Today’s Apple’s Retina displays have a resolution of approximately 500 pixels per inch (dpi). With our new technology with the same size of the screen it is possible to obtain a density of 1500 dpi. This is especially attractive for mobile virtual and augmented reality with their miniature displays,” said Sinton Woo (Shin-Tson Wu), who oversees the project from CREOL.

The researchers noted that the lack of filters allows to reduce the power consumption at the same brightness by about 30%.

Prototypes of displays with liquid crystals in the blue phase was shown by Samsung in 2008, but due to problems of high operating voltage and slow charge the capacitors still have not been able to bring this technology to the market.

The first samples of the new technologies are already working in the laboratory of University of Central Florida College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL), but according to the developers, they have yet to find an optimal balance between voltage and switching speed to be able to fully use a consistent color representation.

The head developer Professor Shin-sungwoo claims that a full prototype of the display matrix can be created in the next year. The first manufacturer of the matrices a new type may be the company AU Optronics.
