The race for cores: Adapteva introduced 1024-core processor

The chip maker Adapteva has announced plans to release a 1024-core Epiphany processor V, which provides a record of performance and is able to work more effectively modern chips due to parallelization.

According to the statement of Adapteva, Epiphany V processor bypasses in a performance chips designed for installation in servers and gaming computers. Each core is able to work independently and perform your own firmware. It is much more effective than the approach that is used in processors, graphics accelerators.

However, at this stage the new product will not become popular among users, as it focused primarily on the installation in system of the automobile autopilot, image processing, real-time, machine learning, speech recognition, etc. Representatives of Adapteva said that enthusiasts may use the chip in Linux, but to work in the “usual” computers it was not designed.

According to representatives of Adapteva, for most purposes Epiphany V can do better than the chips of the x86 architecture (in 16-nanometer Epiphany V is applied RISC).

In the coming months, the chip will be available for testing. For ease of programming the researchers will present the corresponding compiler, and tool for automatic distribution of programs to cores.
