The police of Canada since 2010, intercepted messages BlackBerry

The Federal police of Canada since 2010 had access to encrypted messages on mobile devices BlackBerry worldwide. This is stated in the study of VICE and Motherboard.

According to the media, the police have the server in the canadian capital Ottawa, which “carries out the decryption of messages using the corresponding decryption key”. Law enforcement officers have used this code during the investigation of the criminal case in the period from 2010 to 2012 to intercept more than a million messages to BlackBerry devices. Thus, it is unknown how canadian police this key and whether it is being used still.

Six years ago canadian police have obtained a court order to wiretap persons who were involved in the murders and participating in mafia factions of Montreal and new York. In March 2016, the courts have made a number of convictions of the participants, and at the same time there is information about how the police managed to capture the criminals. It turned out that the police conducted an operation codenamed Clemenza, during which using the private key of the law enforcement officers could intercept and decrypt secure messages.

During the trial the police and Blackberry struggled from the court’s ruling prohibiting disclosure of the existence of Clemenza, but the court decided otherwise. However, the court limited itself to only the message on carrying out similar operations, but the documents fell into the hands of journalists, should not have been made public.

The journalistic investigation was conducted on the background of the trial, Apple and the U.S. government, through the court demanded that the Corporation to help in deciphering data iPhone with a terrorist who killed 14 people in San Bernardino (CA). But after the FBI managed to crack the iPhone without using Apple lawsuit withdrew.
