The new 15-terabyte SSD will solve the problems with memory issues on Mac and PC

Samsung at the event Flash Memory Summit in California provided the most spacious in the world solid state drive — capacity 15 TB and in the form factor of 2.5 inches, Cnews reports. Highest capacity on the market hard drive similar form factor released by Western Digital, has a capacity of 10 TB. In the same line of Seagate’s highest capacity hard drive can hold 8 terabytes of information.

The model of the storage PM1633a capacity 15,36 TB is designed to be installed in the data storage system. During the presentation, Samsung showed a server configuration that includes 48 drives. The total capacity configuration amounted to 768 TB. We ensured the speed of 2 million input/output per second (IOPS).

The device is assembled from the flash memory chips V-NAND, in which the cells are placed one above the other in layers 48 and each of them stores three bits of data. One memory chip has a capacity of 32 GB. The company recently announced the beginning of serial production of such chips.

Technology V-NAND was announced in 2013. Then the company was able to place in one chip layer 24. Then, by 2014, the number of layers was increased to 36 pieces.

In addition PM1633a capacity 15,36 TB, the vendor has announced a line drive PM1633, PM1725 and PM953. They are all based on the same technology — a multi-level cell structure, each cell stores three bits of data. SSDS series PM1633 are available in the form factor of 2.5 inches and is equipped with a SAS interface. Lineup includes models with a capacity of 480 GB, 960 GB of 1.91 TB and 3,84 TB. Line PM1725 includes models with a capacity of 3.2 TB and 6.4 TB. Devices are in the form of a Board with PCIe.

Finally, the line of PM953 available in form factors M. 2 and 2.5 inches. The maximum capacity is 960 GB M. 2 and 1.92 TB for 2.5 inches.

The drives will go on sale in the near future, their value is not specified. Samsung only started selling 2.5-inch SSD with 2TB worth of $800 for consumers and $1000 – for the corporate market.
