The FBI requested access to WhatsApp and iMessage

The Director of the Federal Bureau of investigation (FBI) of the United States James Comey on Wednesday made an appeal to members of Congress about the need to give security services access to the encryption system used by popular instant messengers such as WhatsApp, iMessage and Telegram.

July 8, two United States Senate Committee on legal issues and on intelligence held hearings on the issues of information encryption, privacy and the threat of using encrypted information by criminals for their own purposes. The hearing was made by FBI Director James Comey. He stated that access to the encryption system is the necessary law enforcement and intelligence agencies to combat radical group “Islamic state”.

On the eve of the Komi appealed to residents of the USA with an open letter in which he cautioned against the use of instant messaging through encryption.

“My job is to ensure the safety of people. And I see that end-to-end encryption of communications, actively gaining popularity in recent times, affect my ability to do my job effectively, ” wrote the head of the FBI. — People need to understand for yourself whether there are such technology advantages they offer, or the price is too high”.

According to the head of the FBI, the protection of personal communications using the strongest encryption makes it easier for the extremists the task of recruitment of citizens. In particular, the terrorists are organizing attacks, communicating via private messages on Twitter, and nobody else can read them, and thus to prevent a possible terrorist attack.

“Our job is to dig through a haystack the size of the entire country in search of the needles, which become less visible because of encryption,” said Komi at the hearing in the judiciary Committee of the Senate.

Meanwhile, the company opposed such proposals security services. In particular, Apple and Google last fall has made changes to operating system for its smartphones, making it impossible to decrypt the user information.

Komi has repeatedly criticized Apple for using the system encryption on iPhone and asked them to add a backdoor to access special services. Experts, however, argue that there is no guarantee that the data user in this case will be available only “the right people”.
