The disassembly of the new 21.5-inch iMac is valued at 1 point

Specialists iFixit have studied the anatomy of the new generation of monoblock iMac with 21.5-inch display that Apple introduced this week.

Recall that a key feature of the desktop is Retina screen 4K with a resolution of 4096 x 2304 pixels. 9.4 million pixels — that’s 4.5 times more than the standard 21.5-inch iMac. The computer is equipped with Intel Core 5th generation and improved graphics with Intel Iris Pro Graphics. In the presence of two ports Thunderbolt 2, which provides bandwidth up to 20 Gbps.

In the basic equipment includes monoblock 4-core Intel Core i5, 8 GB (four 2 GB) DDR3, hybrid Fusion Drive capacity of 1 TB and a graphics accelerator Intel HD Graphics 6000 or Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200.

An autopsy conducted by iFixit staff, showed that in iMac with Retina display, 4K, apply the following electronic components:

  • Chip Intel Core i5 processor with a nominal frequency of 1.6 GHz and upgraded it to 2.8 GHz (without support Hyper-Threading technology);
  • RAM Samsung K4E6E304EE-EGCF 16 GB 1867 MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM (4 chips of 2 GB);
  • Gigabit network adapter Gigabit Ethernet Broadcom BCM5776;
  • Audio controller Cirrus Logic 4208-CRZ;
  • Intel Thunderbolt 2 DSL5520;
  • The microchips flash memory Macronix stock MX25L6473E;
  • The camera processor Vimicro VC0359;

On a scale of maintainability iFixit candy bar valued at 1 point out of 10 possible. The main shortcomings noted by the experts – the RAM cannot be upgraded on the motherboard connectors there are no Fusion Drive, the processor soldered to the motherboard, making it impossible to replace or upgrade.

 

The iMac display is paired with a protective glass this increases the cost of repairs. After opening the back cover will require a full replacement double-sided tape that requires certain skills. For comparison, the 21.5-inch 2013 model year managed to earn 1 point more.
