While many argue about whether the iPad Pro resonated with fans of “Apple”, Apple CEO Tim cook is confident that the innovative tablet with a diagonal of 12.9 inches will replace laptops and PCs. Design Director of the publishing house Vox Media Carrie ruby decided within a few days to work on the iPad instead of the MacBook Pro and recorded their impressions.
Ruby usually works on a MacBook Pro with Adobe software, so she downloaded the app Sketch for raster illustrations, vector Draw and Comp for layout. Impressed by her simple work Comp, because the application itself was made of hand drawn rectangles and lines in photos and text.
But to work “mobile” apps were complaints. First of all, ruby could only do simple designs or layouts. A difficult project to work on the tablet appeared to be uncomfortable, so the designer had to go back to his laptop. Secondly, Draw, and Sketch did not support keyboard shortcuts from Adobe Illustrator, which ruby often was used in a MacBook Pro. Thirdly, in all applications there were elements that they could not be edited.
Stylus Apple Pencil had made a good impression. It sits comfortably in the hand, works accurately and better feathers from other manufacturers. “Usually I make the sketch on paper, photographed it, sent by mail, and then explain the meaning of thin wavy lines. Now I just draw with Pencil and Apple mail”, — quotes the designer Lookatme.
Of the disadvantages of working with Apple Pencil she noted the display delay in third-party applications (for example, Paper and Adobe Sketch) and the traces on the screen of the bracelets on the wrist.
During testing, ruby tried a different plug keyboard and noted that the branded Smart Keyboard works better than others. It prints quietly, looks “aesthetically pleasing” and does not require additional chargers or connect via Bluetooth.
She also noted that I felt the weight of the tablet (712 grams), I used both cameras, but emphasized the convenience of a large screen, which can be compared with two iPads next to each other.
Ruby decided that the iPad Pro (or similar device) over time can replace a regular laptop, but now it has limitations that require switching on a desktop computer.
