The messenger Telegram has announced the launch of voice calls for users of the app. Feature is available in version Telegram number 3.18. In the first phase, the service launched in Western Europe, but the developers promise to extend it to the whole world in the very near future.
Instant messenger users outside Western Europe (Germany, France, Belgium, the UK and other countries) will be able to use later. However, if the person, which already have access to calls, call the user, in which there is no such function, then the second source will also be able to call friends.
Conversations are protected by end-to-end encryption, the parties can compare their keys with each other during the conversation to make sure protection. In order to verify that the caller is who they claim to be, you need to compare four emojis on the screens of the caller and verify that they match.
Where possible, voice calls will be made through the p2p connection to provide excellent sound quality with minimal flow of traffic and a high speed connection. If such a connection is impossible, the messenger will connect to the nearest server. “We will expand our network around the world to speed up the connection”, — noted in a Telegram.
For the analysis of the voice messenger will use the neural network that will have access to the content of the conversations, but will collect technical information about the call.
In the messenger interface you can choose exactly who of your contacts can call you and who should be restricted solely to text messaging. If the flow of traffic is critical, you can choose the option “Use Less Data” and save about 25-30% of the traffic at the expense of sound quality.
In addition to the function of audio calls, the new version of Telegram users can configure the level of compression of videos and to preview the result before sending. Will messenger start a video call, is still unknown.
Earlier Telegram founder Pavel Durov has criticized Apple for being slow. According to him, the regular updating of the messenger was on moderation for a few weeks, before it was added to App Store.
