Sharp indirectly confirmed the release of the iPhone with curved OLED screen

This week Foxconn and Sharp have agreed to a deal in which the Taiwanese contract electronics manufacturer – assembler of iPhones and iPads – will become the owner of a controlling stake in the Japanese company. More specifically, Foxconn will receive a 66% stake in Sharp, spending $3,46 billion.

Already there is information that will be primarily directed investments. In particular, it is expected that Sharp will buy back the building to its headquarters in Osaka in Western Japan, sold some time ago to improve the financial position and reduce operating costs. Sharp continues to occupy the building but now leases it.

According to DigiTimes, the main direction of development were selected displays OLED: it has allocated more than half of all funds invested Foxconn ($1.8 billion). This can be useful leadership Sharp’s IGZO technology, as it is supposed to be used in OLED panels.

The first time Foxconn is planning to focus on OLED displays for smartphones, which is consistent with the rumors about switching to iPhone but the technology of organic LEDs. On the issue of panels, Sharp plans to convert three production lines, total production capacity of about $9,85 million displays a month.

Later Sharp plans to master the production of panels larger. The supply of parts for laptops and tablets at Foxconn expects to start in 2021.

Previously one of the leading experts-analysts who study Apple’s plans, Ming Chi Kuo, spoke about radical innovations in terms of design from the iPhone, providing for the transition to a 5.8-inch AMOLED displays. According to information obtained by the analyst from sources to the Asian suppliers, in 2017 smartphones Apple will get the body with the elements made of bent glass and curved screen.

iPhone with 5.8-inch AMOLED screen can get paired with a more compact 4.7-inch model that uses the traditional Apple display technology, LCD. If partners will not be able to put a new matrix in sufficient quantity, the iPhone in 2017 will be released at all three 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch with LCD screens, and exclusive of 5.8-inch with AMOLED.
