Samsung Galaxy M31 review: megagalactic centenarian

Samsung Galaxy M31 review: megagalactic centenarian

If you think about what a phone should be with all the necessary qualities, then a device with a large screen, good performance, a bunch of cameras, a capacious battery looms in the mind, and of course, NFC should be. As an example of such a device, I want to show the Samsung Galaxy M31.

Template style

Externally, the new Samsung Galaxy M31 does not differ from the previously presented models of the M-series, the popular trend is in force: there are more and more similar smartphones and the novelty is no exception. This is a large phone with an elongated screen, a plastic case of moderate thickness. For a smartphone with a high-capacity battery, the Samsung Galaxy M31 was not very heavy and not bulky.

The phone comes in three colors: black, blue and red. In my opinion, this is not quite red, but rather a pinkish-purple hue

Creeps out of hand

It's time to forget the template phrases about the convenience of using one hand – phones have already become very large. All buttons are in the usual places, there are no questions to the management.

The glossy plastic case is slippery, small scratches and prints on the surface appear quickly enough. There is no protective cover in the kit, it will need to be bought separately.

The issue of personal data security is easily solved: either start unlocking in the face, the method is quick, but less reliable; Or use a fingerprint scanner. It works smartly too, the technique is safer. The scanner is located behind, you can accidentally get your finger past and slap the camera, but this is a matter of habit.

Impressive Screen

The display is covered with a protective glass Gorilla Glass 3, an additional protective film on the screen is not glued. I didn’t go with the phone for so long, but managed to plant some large scratches, so I advise you to stick a protective glass immediately after purchase.

If in more expensive Samsung Galaxy A-series models the camera is hidden in a neat hole made in the screen, then the models use the classic cutout more simply. If desired, the front-end can be hidden in the settings by activating the black panel, but then the aesthetics suffer.

The display is bright, contrasting, with excellent black color and a good picture – Super AMOLED in all its glory and all the usual advantages. Everything is clearly visible on the street, and indoors in the evenings at minimum illumination with night mode, you can read.

Talk about speed

In many, though not all, mid-range Samsung smartphones, the Samsung Exynos 9611 processor is used. It is the Galaxy M31, the RAM is 6 GB, and the built-in memory can be 64 or 128 GB. A microSD card slot is provided, and the card is installed in a separate slot next to two SIM cards.

I liked the speed of the phone, and not so long ago I tested other models of the M-series with a similar filling. They did not work so fast, it was unexpected for me – I thought that the Galaxy M31 uses a more productive filling, but no. Perhaps the difference in the increased amount of RAM, or maybe just optimized the system.

The smartphone runs on Android 10, One UI 2.0 interface with support for themes, gestures and pleasant things like Always-On Display.

I would like to highlight interesting features regarding other models of the company, but here everything is familiar. There is NFC and support for Samsung Pay, Wi-Fi is stable, with Bluetooth everything is fine, too, OnePlus Bullets headphones paired with the phone keep a good connection. Of course, you can immediately use two SIM-cards – in general, they have not forgotten anything.

There is only one speaker in the phone, it is average in power, it does not play very effectively – it's better to connect headphones to listen to music. There is also the usual 3.5 mm port for a classic wired headset.

How the camera shoots

In terms of photos, the smartphone differs from other models of the M-series: it has a main camera of four modules, just like in the more expensive Galaxy A71. So, we have at our disposal a main camera of 64 megapixels, which by default takes pictures of 16 megapixels when several pixels merge into one. Thus, the phone copes better with difficult shooting conditions in low light.

As a bonus, we get a wide-angle camera, a rare lens for macro photography, as well as an auxiliary module for processing depth of field.

The main camera copes well with daytime shooting: sharpness is at a level, there are almost no misses with a white balance, the colors are nice, HDR accurately works out the shadows. There is a night mode hidden in the camera settings when the phone glues several frames into one. However, this mode does not work for the wide-angle module.

The shortcomings are generally typical for a model of this level: on the wide-angle module, the edges of the pictures are blurry, and the macro mode, in my opinion, is rather pampering. Very good lighting is required to get a quality shot.

An example is made on an ultra-wide angle lens.

The front camera pleases with high resolution – it is 32 megapixels, the pictures are clear. You can also switch to wide-angle mode, which is convenient when shooting group portraits.

I am glad that the autonomy of modern Android smartphones can do without charging for several days. In this case, you do not have to manually configure the phone, killing resource-intensive processes and delving into the settings, selecting the optimal parameters for increasing the operating time. The saved hours can be spent in a more interesting way, and the Samsung Galaxy M31 can be cited as an example of a record phone.

With a modest load, he lived for almost 4 days, with more intensive use it turned out 2 full days of work, with 8-9 hours of active screen. Discharging it in a day is in principle unrealistic, unless playing without stopping or starting navigation on the street.

The kit comes with a 15 W charger, with its help the phone is fully charged via USB Type-C in 2.5 hours. I think this is a good result for a smartphone with a 6000 mAh battery.

What else to buy

The phone sells for 19,990 rubles, this is the price of the version with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory. I did not find direct competitors with the same filling and a 6000 mAh battery, so I added the same models that I listed in the Samsung Galaxy A31 review. I'll start with him. It is inferior in battery capacity, in performance, but it costs 17,990 rubles.

In addition to it, you can pay attention to the OPPO A9 2020, which is inferior in screen resolution, but in the role of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor.

If the old micro-USB does not bother you, then you can pay attention to the Vivo Y19. Of course, I also mention Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, which is also an interesting option.

At the same time, if the battery capacity does not play a special role, you can buy a more spectacular Samsung Galaxy A51, keeping within 17,990 rubles.

The fashion for large screens has led to the fact that phones with high-capacity batteries began to appear more often on sale. The trend is interesting for everyone, except that the manufacturers of external batteries are now sad. After all, the owner of the Galaxy M31 will never think about buying a Power Bank.

If you look at the sales of middle-class Samsung smartphones, the focus is on two hits: this is the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71. At the same time, Samsung has a large family of various models, where each customer can choose a device to suit their individual requirements.

In particular, the Samsung Galaxy M31 appeared on sale for those who do not like to often charge the phone, but do not want to give up their usual convenience and need a smartphone with all the modern excesses. By them I mean a large screen, good performance, USB Type-C for charging and NFC for contactless shopping, as well as a good camera and a traditional pair of SIM cards.
