Russian mobile operators reported an increase in spam in mobile messaging

In September the number of customer complaints on spam via popular instant messengers Viber, Skype, WhatsApp, etc. – significantly increased compared to the same period last year. About this report “Vedomosti”.

The representative of MTS Dmitry Solodovnikov told the newspaper that in September the number of complaints has increased 10 times compared with the same period of 2014. The exact value he did not disclose. The representative of “MegaFon” Tatyana Zvereva proved that her company also increased the flow of spam complaints in the messengers.

According to Solodovnikov, OTT spam grows, it reduces the flow of traditional sms-spam. Since the surge of sms spam in 2012, the average number of unsolicited messages received by subscribers of MTS, dropped by almost 40 times, the number of complaints of spam – 18.

Beeline and Tele2 did not disclose data on complaints on spam in instant messengers. An employee of one of cellular operators on the condition of anonymity said that in 2014, the monthly operators received hundreds of complaints from users, but now the account goes on thousand.

Currently operators do not have the ability to affect the amount of spam in messengers and can only prompt users to block unwanted accounts, says Solodovnikov. The representative of “Beeline” Anna Imasheva reported that operators and authorities have so far only discuss methods of protection from unwanted messages in instant messengers — for example, creating a free service for users to unsubscribe from spam.

Recipes to fight spam in messenger and no other operators. Now the activities of OTT services are not regulated in any way normative, so to remedy the situation with spam in them you must enter their official classification and rules of work for them, protecting subscribers from spam.

Operators don’t like OTT services not because of the fact that through them it is easier to send spam, they are primarily concerned that the free services audience flows and the proceeds of their additional services, primarily sms, the General Director Telecom Daily Denis Kuskov. The loss of the Russian mobile operators from OTT services in 2014, according to analysts J’son & Partners Consulting, amounted to 15-20 billion rubles, or about 2% of their income. And only in the world, according to Juniper Research, operators from OTT services has lost $14 billion in revenue.
