The company “Rostelecom”, controlled by the state through Rosimushchestvo and Vnesheconombank, decided to become the owner of the Russian version of the operating system Sailfish is the only mobile platform, certified in Russia as an alternative to iOS and Android for use in government agencies.
As reported by “Vedomosti”, citing its own sources, Rostelecom and developer of Sailfish – the Finnish company Jolla, created by immigrants from Nokia and controlled by Russian businessman, owner of ESN group Grigory Beryozkin. Berezkin supposedly going to get for OSes $50 million – about the same amount, according to rumors, the businessman is required to purchase Mikhail Prokhorov’s media holding RBC. According to other sources, Newspapers, in addition to “Rostelecom” negotiations are under way with other potential buyers, including foreign.
At the same time close to the Berezkin sources clarify: on sale only a Russian version of Sailfish, the development of which is controlled by businessman “Open mobile platform”. This version was included in the Russian registry, which is a priority for state-owned companies in procurement. In December the “Mail of Russia” has announced plans to buy 15, 000 Russian Sailfish smartphones for their employees.
It is worth noting that while Jolla is developing alternative mobile platform for China. In late February, the company announced the creation of a consortium Sailfish China, which will focus on the development of software for the Chinese market. In the interests of the group — the creation of an independent mobile platform Sailfish OS for China, as well as software for secure smartphones, smart watches, TVs, cars and devices of the Internet of things. In the development of the Sailfish ecosystem, the consortium members intend to invest $250 million.
