Roscomnadzor blocked in Russia’s WeChat messenger

Roscomnadzor made in the register of banned resources, the popular messaging app WeChat. Limited work as a website and mobile app.

According to the website service, domain wechat.com entered in the register on 4 may. It is noted that the reason for the block was the article of the Federal law “On information, information technologies and protection of information”.

The address entered in the register of prohibited marked “Restricting”, which involves the blocking of all IP addresses and technical domains service. The same mark was used on the lock Line messenger and BBM and app Zello, which refused inclusion in the list of organizers of information dissemination.

As in the case of Line, the reason for the block was the failure to provide information to make WeChat into the register of organisers of dissemination of information.

WeChat is one of the largest messengers in the world, popular in China. According to its own data, the audience of service exceeds 800 million users per month. What percentage of Russian users is unknown.

Earlier this month, on the basis of the same article, Roskomnadzor restricted access to the messengers BlackBerry Messenger, Line, and Imo, as well as to the chat service Vchat. All of them were not registered in Russia as organizers of information distribution.

Zello, Line, and BBM was blocked after not provided Roskomnadzor with information about users. Sites from this registry must store data about user activity and provide them upon request of authorized bodies such as the FSB.

In the registry of the organizers of the dissemination of information about more than 70 services. Among them service for Dating Badoo, e-mail clients Mail.Ru Group and “Yandex” the social network “Vkontakte”, Swiss messaging app Threema, as well as file storage Depositfiles Letitbit and Mediaget.
