New 4K and 5K iMac cannot be used in target display mode

Since 2009 the iMac has supported work in target display mode. The user can connect a legacy monoblock to another Mac via the Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt, and thus extend the life of the computer.

In 2014 he released the iMac 5K, which has lost this function. According to one version, the reason lies in the limitations of Thunderbolt 2 interface, which is not able to provide the work of the monitor in native resolution.

After the release of the new 4K and 5K iMac with a Thunderbolt connector 3 that supports a resolution of 5K (5120×2880), many people are interested in the question whether the return of Apple’s long-awaited feature.

However, representatives of Apple stated that the iMac 2017 cannot be used in target display mode, and the company has no plans to introduce such a possibility.

On the support page indicated that the iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch), released in 2014 and later, cannot be used as external monitors for other computers.

Of course, there are other ways of broadcasting the image from one Mac to another, but a hardware solution is always better.
