MTS announced the beginning of testing 5G in Russia

MTS and Ericsson have agreed to conduct joint research aimed at the use of communication technologies in 5G networks. The speed of information exchange in these networks is 30 times higher speeds in 4G networks — more than 10GB per second. It is expected that their work will create a test zone 5G network at world Cup 2018.

Under the agreement, in addition to research, the companies will develop technical requirements for a new generation. Testing of solutions Ericsson in pilot projects on MTS network will begin in 2016. The company also will conduct a “joint dialogue” with the Russian regulator on the use of the frequency spectrum for 5G.

The commercial launch of 5G, MTS can take place in 2019-2020, but not earlier than will be developed by an appropriate standard. Conclusion standardization is expected in 2018. MTS expects that the client base of the operator will grow in the future due to the increase in the number of users of “Internet of things”, so the launch of 5G should be focused and such customers.

In 2014 a similar agreement with Huawei was signed by the Russian operator “MegaFon”. The contract involves that the operator’s specialists will participate in the development of standard communications and Huawei taking into account the recommendations of MegaFon will test it on networks of pilot equipment of the new standard. The company is also going to test 5G on the eve of the world football championship 2018.

Another Russian operator Beeline, is currently holding talks with vendors that are planning to supply equipment for 5G networks in the Russian market. While deployment of LTE (4G) Beeline takes into account the possibility of its potential use as first releases 5G. Operator Tele2 will focus on the development of networks of the third and fourth generation (3G and 4G), because these technologies will be most in demand in the next few years, said the representative of the company Olga prokopiya galushina. “It’s efficient from an economic point of view and will enable you to provide customers with high quality services at low prices,” she said.
