McAfee: the number of Mac viruses is growing at an alarming rate

The number of security vulnerabilities for Mac for the first quarter of 2017 increased by 53%, according to Cnews, citing a report by McAfee. In total during the specified period, there were 700,000 cases of infection by macOS. However, Apple can still be considered safe – for comparison, the number of malware for Windows over the same period exceeded 700 million.

According to analysts, the number of threats for Mac continues to grow. Just for the quarter, McAfee has registered 700,000 cases of infection of Apple computers.

However, in the first quarter of 2017, analysts have seen a decline in emergence of new variants of malware for the Mac. The main part of the virus currently is adware attached to the application that load “MacOS users”.

The growing popularity of this method and due to the increase in the number of incidents. Since the App store available for Apple computers experts recommend you download only from trusted sources. McAfee notes that the ads, though annoying to the user, does not damage its files.

No matter how rapid was the growth in the number of threats for macOS, with Windows the situation is worse. Just for the quarter, McAfee recorded approximately 700 million cases of infection with various versions of Windows, that is 1000 times more than on macOS.

This difference is due to a lower prevalence and greater resistance to viruses macOS compared to Windows.
