iPhone vs. Galaxy S6 edge, Sony Xperia Z5 Compact and the Lenovo Vibe Shot: the test of resistance to frost

If you like winter sports, often go for a walk or just live in Russia, the behavior of the smartphone in the cold is a very important parameter. More recently, cell phones could begin to freeze in the cold, be consumed quickly or even disconnected. Much has changed since then? Experts Hi-tech-mail together with “M. Video” has tested five popular models of smartphones – iPhone 6, Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, Lenovo Vibe Shot, Sony Xperia Z5 Compact and LG Class – to understand, who from them better survive the cold.

For most tested devices operating temperature: -10 to +45 degrees”. It turns out that in frost below -10 smartphones die? Is, however the gadgets faster increase battery life suffers and smooth operation.

In the first test, five fully charged smartphone out at a temperature of -5 degrees. Each was used for half an hour to check route and weather, reading mail, telephone calls and photography. All models passed the test equally, half an hour drained only 2-3%, no glitches and freezes were noticed.

The second experiment was more interesting: the same five gadgets left for half hour at a temperature of -5 degrees. The result is more tangible, the batteries of smartphones has discharged more than usual – on average 15-20%. Metal iPhone and LG Class discharged a little faster than a glass Samsung, Sony and Lenovo; the glass has a lower thermal conductivity, weaker heats and cools more slowly.

Finally, in the last experiment, all five machines put for 1 hour in the freezer with a temperature of -15 degrees. All smartphones were set to maximum brightness, turned off power saving modes and running YouTube videos.

The results of this test first appeared Xperia Z5 Compact. When the communicators were taken from the freezer, all except for this gadget were cold. Probably, this has been achieved at the expense of special materials, gaskets and sealants. Apparently, protection IP68 saves not only on water but also from the cold. And maybe it’s the “hot” processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 810. Remaining battery Xperia Z5 Compact with 79%. (Capacity 2700 mAh).

iPhone 6 came in last with 20%. (The battery capacity 1810 mAh). If with weak frost machine coped perfectly well (at a temperature of -5 on the balcony he lay with the screen on for 1.5 hours and discharged only up to 80%), prolonged stay in the cold -15 gadget is contraindicated, the authors explain.

The results of the other following gadgets: Galaxy S6 Edge came in second with a charge of 78% (the battery capacity is 2600 mAh), LG Class – third (77%, battery 2050 mAh), the Lenovo Vibe Shot – fourth (76%, battery 3000 mAh).

Note that Apple specifies the operating temperatures for the iPhone from 0 to 35 degrees, less than the competition. But this is only approximate figures, because iPhone users are in Russia, and in Canada, so don’t worry. Nevertheless in the freezer “Apple” gadget runs out of power faster than the competition.
