iOS 11: new formats for shooting HEIF and HEVC will save up to 50% of the space on iPhone and iPad

2017 at WWDC, Apple introduced several hardware and software innovations. One of them was iOS 11 on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

At the moment the update is in beta testing, the first build is already available for registered developers. The new OS includes many improvements and changes, including formats for shooting HEIF and HEVC . According to the company, users will be able to save up to 50% of the space on iPhone and iPad, if you compare the sizes photos and videos in HEIF and HEVC with traditional formats.

The 9to5Mac decided to test it in practice. They took the iPhone with a pre-installed beta version iOS 11, took a few photos and videos and saved them in new formats.

In one of the photos was captured night in new York. The JPG took 2 MB and format HEIF — 1.2 MB. Video format H. 264 occupied 61,2 MB, in the format H. 265 (HEVC) — 33 MB. Thus, the file size decreased by almost two times, and the quality has remained at the same level.

The ability to save space in the internal memory of the device is indeed an important innovation, especially in the case of the iPhone, which has no memory card slot. Of course, you can choose a model with a large amount of flash memory, but the videos in high definition is still very quickly “eat” space.
