Inoi, “Elbrus” and GLONASS: domestic gadgets and software, which will replace the Russians iPhone and Mac

Russian officials have found that foreign IT-companies monopolized local market. Particularly radical government officials proposed to limit the access of foreign producers to public procurement.

Is it possible now to reduce dependence on American and European IT development? Russia has its own assemblers of computers, smartphones and tablets, software and complex information systems, such as satellite navigation. But the comparison of price and quality often leads consumers to make a choice in favor of foreign products. In what segments of the IT market tries to gain a foothold domestic products?

Inoi smartphones on Sailfish OS

This week in Russia started selling smartphone Inoi R7, the main feature of which is the use the operating system Sailfish Mobile OS RUS – Russian platform on the components of Sailfish OS with the protection of personal data.

RUS Sailfish Mobile OS based on the Linux kernel. The system architecture allows to run each application in an isolated segment and to deny him access to important files and documents. It refers to the lack imposed on the user of cloud-based storage for backup data.

The smartphone relies on a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor 212 and equipped with a 5-inch screen on the IPS matrix with a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels (720p). Resolution front and rear cameras — 5 and 8 million pixels respectively. Inoi R7 carries on Board 2 GB of RAM and flash module with a capacity of 16 GB expandable through microSD card. There is a Micro-USB port and a 3.5 mm headphone Jack. Food provides a battery of 2500 mAh.

In the tablet market, the situation is almost the same as in the PC market, leading global manufacturers (first of all this is Apple and Samsung), and the Russian brand teXet, for example (belongs to the company “Electronic systems Alkotel” from St. Petersburg) and Explay Hit (Moscow company “Ekspla”), trading models, designed and assembled in China. teXet is one of the leaders in shipments of tablets in Russia. The massive sales in this market just cheap tablets with 7-inch for 5-10 roubles; for comparison, the price of iPad from Apple starts from 29 000 RUB.

Computers “Elbrus 101-PC” based on “Elbrus”

Personal computer “Elbrus 101-PC” — a fully domestic development. Even the processor in a PC own — single-core chip “Elbrus 4C” with a clock frequency of 800 MHz, made on 40-nanometer process technology.

Running the whole thing on the operating system “Elbrus OS” based on the notorious Linux. “Elbrus-101 PC” is marketed as a work computer for businesses and government agencies. Recently began producing a test batch PC, there is one such computer — 130 000 rbl.; the commercial model will cost 70 000. Bury “Elbrusy”, however, still not worth it. First, the mass market this computer is not designed. Secondly, this year began production of OCTA-core processor “Elbrus 8S”, and the existing processors are used in particular in server systems supporting the system of issuing passports in the country.

Desktops iRU

Ten years ago in Russia, the biggest sales were the Russian collectors of computers — Rover laptop Computer, desktop computers, Formoza, Depo Computer or K-Systems. However, with the exception of housing, they are almost 100% composed of foreign components. In recent years, this market leader is China’s Lenovo and Taiwan’s Asus and Acer, but the top of the largest PC vendors, according to analyst firm IDC, also includes Russian company — DNS, Depo Computer. However, PC sales in Russia are down and interest in this business around the world is also reduced.

Search Engine “Sputnik”

Sputnik had to replace the Russians even Google and Yandex (which is especially strange, given that Yandex is a Russian company).

According to a former state Duma Deputy Ilya Ponomaryov, the idea of creating a “national search engine” appeared in 2008 after the conflict with Georgia. Then it became especially clear that the Russians use the same “Yandex” or “Rambler” is not only to search for sites in the network, but also to read news and obtain information that is at odds with the official position of the state. According to the newspaper “Vedomosti”, like “media” search engines are not good enough for many officials and it was decided to create a similar resource content which you can control directly. The development engaged in “Rostelecom”, the initial investment in the project amounted to $20 million, but the sum of all investments in “Sputnik” for its support is not disclosed.

Anyway, Sputnik “took off”. It was launched in 2014 and since then has not achieved even one percent search share of the Russian Internet. The average number of transitions from “Sputnik” on other sites are now around 100 000, while the “Yandex” and Google it billions.

OS AltLinux

The family of Linux operating systems, open source allows anyone to produce their own version of this operating system — they are usually spread for free and the money taken for the maintenance of the system (these OSes apply and Google’s Android). Russian companies also release their version of Linux — for example, AltLinux. Former communications Minister Leonid Reiman was going to modify the French operating system Mandriva to offer it to Russian officials, but recently, the company bought the assets of Mandriva went bankrupt.

GLONASS

Global navigation satellite system (GLONASS), like its American counterpart GPS, was developed primarily for the military. But now satellite navigation and civil users, no less: it can help in an unfamiliar area focuses on the entire transport and travelers. All major manufacturers of smartphones and tablets from Apple, now support GLONASS. Satellite navigation quarreled Russia and the United States even before the events around the Crimea: American power in 2013, banned construction on the territory of the country of GLONASS ground stations in response, Russia promised to disable the on-land GPS stations.
