How to prepare a Mac for sale

2017 at WWDC Apple introduced new models of iMac and MacBook, and again the time has come when you should decide whether you want to sell your old Mac and buy a new one. If you still decide to sell the computer, don’t forget to prepare it.

1. Make a backup copy of the

If you already have a new Mac, you can easily transfer all the data from the old using Time Machine. If you plan on buying another Mac soon after the sale, make sure you have backed up all personal data.

2. Sign out of all accounts

So that the buyer did not have any difficulties using the software on your Mac, log out of your account in all Apple services.

How to sign out iTunes

Open iTunes.

Click on “Account” in the top bar.

Click “Exit”.

How to get out of iMessage

Open the app “Messages”.

In the top panel.

Next, click on “Settings” and then “Account”.

Select the iMessage account.

Click “Exit”.

How to get out of iCloud

Click on the Apple logo in the upper left corner on Mac.

Open “System settings”.

Select “iCloud”.

Disable the “Find my Mac”.

Enter the password.

Click “Exit” and confirm the deletion of data from Mac.

3. Format the hard drive

Make sure that all important data is synced, then you can format the hard disk to remove all information.

Turn on or restart your Mac.

Immediately after the start of the computer press and hold Command+R until the Apple logo appears.

Select “Disk utility”.

Click “Continue”.

Select the hard disk on which the system is installed (most likely it will be called “Macintosh HD”).

Click “Delete”.

Select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Again hit “Delete”.

Exit Disk utility by command+Q.

4. Reinstall macOS

After formatting the disk don’t turn off your Mac, and immediately perform a clean installation of macOS. If you turned off the computer, restart it, holding down Command+R.

It should be borne in mind that to reinstall your operating system, you must be connected to the Internet.

In the window “Utilities”, select “Reinstall macOS” and follow the instructions on the screen.

After installation is complete, press Command+Q to quit.
