How to jailbreak Apple TV 4 using Pangu

Today was released the jailbreak for Apple TV 4. This is the first jailbreak for set-top boxes of the fourth generation, before hackers managed to crack Apple TV 2G only. Developed the jailbreak developers Pangu. The same hackers previously released a jailbreak for iOS versions 9.0, 9.0.1 and 9.1.

The exploit for hacking the Apple TV is designed primarily for researchers in the field of security and developers. It is a set of tools for hacking the firmware and are not suitable for ordinary users. Pangu allows you to access Apple TV via SSH for the file system. We are not talking about installing Cydia or tweaks. As we said, this is only the first step towards the development of the tvOS independent developers.

Below we provide detailed guidance on working with Pangu jailbreak for Apple TV. It is worth noting that the exploit only supports the operating system tvOS 9.0 and 9.0.1. For more recent versions of the OS, the jailbreak is not suitable.

Requirements:

How to jailbreak Apple TV 4

Step 1: connect your Apple TV to your Mac via USB cable.

Step 2: Disable automatic updates under Settings –> System –> Updates.

Step 3: Download ZIP files jailbreak Pangu and iOS App Signer and save them, extract them to the desktop.

Step 4: Open Xcode and navigate to File → New → Project → tvOS → Application → Single View Application → Next.

Step 5: Complete the fields as follows:

  • Product Name: Jailbreak
  • Organization: <Your name>
  • Organization Identifier: com.jailbreak.appletv

Leave everything else as is. Click Next → Create.

Step 6: Click Product → Destination → Apple TV.

Step 7: under team select your Apple ID. If you do not have an account, create a new one. Bind it to Xcode under Xcode → Preferences → Accounts.

Step 8: Click Fix issue.

Step 9: Run iOS App Signer, click the Browse button and select the file atvipa.app of subfolders in the folder Payload Pangu that you downloaded in step 3.

Step 10: In the program select the iOS App Signer Certificate and Provisioning Profile for the program you created in Xcode.

Step 11: Click on Start in iOS App Signer. On the desktop, a new file appears atvipa.ipa.

Step 12: Open Xcode and navigate to Window → Devices. Here select your Apple TV.

Step 13: Press the “+” button in the Installed section and select the file atvipa.ipa from the desktop.

Step 14: the Pangu Jailbreak should now be downloaded to Apple TV. Once it appears on the home screen of Apple TV, launch the application to complete the jailbreak.

Step 15: Congratulations! Now you can connect to Apple TV via SSH. You need to use the address in the Wi-Fi network your set top box.
