Google maps has learned to work without Internet

Google has launched an offline mode for mobile apps Google Maps. This is stated in the company blog. From today the update will be available to users of Android app worldwide and iPhone and iPad the function will work “soon”.

On Google Maps without a Network connection you can see a detailed map of the desired area, get directions, and find the address, for example, restaurant or store. By default, the function of downloading maps only works when connected to Wi-Fi.

“Starting today you can download part of the map on your smartphone and use it when Internet is not at hand! Wherever you are — on a country road far from civilization or in the underground car Park of the shopping centre — Google Maps will continue to work without interference. Now offline users can view detailed maps, full route guidance, search for addresses as well as other useful information, such as opening hours, ratings and contacts,” writes Google.

For maps worked offline, you must first download them to your smartphone by downloading the specific scheme of the city. In order to save the device memory markers on the maps will not show the pictures of the place — only the name, rating, mode of operation and a phone organization.

The time to destination will be calculated approximately on the basis of accumulated data about traffic jams. If you have downloaded maps, the service automatically switches to offline mode when necessary. Once the connection becomes stable again, the system will load the relevant data, including information about the traffic conditions and predict traffic jams. Offline yet available for pedestrian navigation. The company plans to expand the list of functions in the future.
