One of the main characteristics macOS is considered to be immune to malicious software. However, some experts believe that even a Mac can “catch” a virus or Trojan, like any other computer. Hence the need to find and install quality antivirus.
Most antivirus software for macOS provides reliable protection from malware, but a popular program MacKeeper is not included in their number. This was stated by the specialists of the research laboratory AV-TEST in Magdeburg, Germany. The company is engaged in the testing and evaluation of antivirus software support on different platforms.
AV-TEST tested 10 of the most well-known anti-virus software for macOS. Turned out to be only nine of them do well with their tasks. Four programs (Bitdefender Antivirus, Intego Mac Internet Security X9, Kaspersky Internet Security and Symantec Norton Security) showed the highest results, finding all the “pests”. Except Intego, they also managed to find malware on Windows that may be lurking on your Mac.
Lost job popular antivirus MacKeeper. He found only 85,9% of the threats, although the research firm AV-TEST sets the minimum threshold of 90%. On the other hand, even this protection is better than nothing.
In second place is Trend Micro Antivirus with a score of 99.5%. Followed by Canimaan Software ClamXav Sentry, ESET Endpoint Security and Sophos Endpoint Central, scored 98.4 per cent. Any of these antiviruses have to protect the Mac from malicious software. Product ProtectWorks AntiVirus with 94.6% of the detected threats is in last place (of those who have passed the test).
It is worth noting that all tested programs worked in conjunction with built-in security protocols, macOS, including Gatekeeper and XProtect. Unlike Windows, installation of additional antivirus programs on the Mac does not affect the protection preloaded from Apple, but complements it.
