EA considers Apple TV a threat to the future of gaming consoles

While players continue to wonder what will happen after the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U, the big players like EA are already actively preparing for what may await us in the future. At the conference UBS Global Technology CFO of EA Blake Jorgensen shared his thoughts on this.

“We at EA believe that in the future serious games are not going anywhere – a casual game is nice, but gamers have always liked, and the big exciting game, and we have not noticed signs that the trend toward “kazualok”. Therefore, it is logical to ask – what will be the console of the future, and who will be engaged in production?”

According to Jorgensen, modern console begin to “fall out” of the usual order of high-tech products: smartphones if people are already used to change every couple of years, the console still sold in the house for at least 5 years or even 10. That’s why consoles in their traditional form are waiting for a threat from an unexpected source – Apple finally decided to add to our televisions and set-top boxes more or less decent gaming ability is already so much work before, and up to date with potential profits from such a move. Thus, according to EA, some years later a full-fledged consoles from Sony and Microsoft can go into oblivion, if their creators did not have time to readjust to the situation.

In the EA for this turn of events are prepared in advance, trying to make a comfortable transition to any potential future platforms. If in-house was used 26 different game engines, but now there were only two, Frostbite and Ignite; moreover, in the future it is planned to leave only Frostbite. According to Jorgensen, past the whole “zoo” of a company to anything – after all “to transfer one engine to the rails of the new platform is much less labor-intensive than twenty-six”.
