DigiTimes: Intel will supply up to 50% LTE modem for iPhone 7

Intel will deliver up to 50% of LTE modems for smartphones iPhone 7, the output of which is expected in September this year. It is reported by DigiTimes, citing industry sources.

Intel will produce the chips in collaboration with two Taiwanese companies – TSMC, the world’s largest contract manufacturer of semiconductors, and King Yuan Electronics (KYEC), which specializes in testing of chips. Official confirmation from the specified company could not be obtained.

For three years the exclusive supplier of LTE modems for the iPhone was Qualcomm, but last year there were rumors that Apple decided to change the partner and will now purchase the majority of LTE chips from Intel. In a Bloomberg report that information in part confirmed by the head of Qualcomm Steve Mollenkopf. During a conference after the publication of the quarterly results in late April 2016, it is reported that one of the major customers of Qualcomm this year decided to go to a competing manufacturer. From the above, analysts have concluded that under the large partner meant Apple, and under a competing vendor – Intel.

According to reports, at the initial stage Apple will use Intel’s modems only in those versions of the iPhone 7, which are designed for specific sales regions. In the US, for example, preference will be given to Qualcomm modems.
