Chapter Mail.Ru Group invested in a 3D scanner for iPad

The company Grishin Robotics, founded by CEO Mail.Ru Group Dmitry Grishin, has become a co-investor Occipital developer 3D scanner for mobile devices Apple. The total investment, according to Rbc, is $13 million.

The company Occipital is the developer of the world’s first 3D scanner space for iPad. The engineers came up with the technology to scan three-dimensional objects — the room, chair and so on. Technology built into a device called Structure Sensor that is similar to the flat camera that connects to iPad via USB cable. Infrared LEDs of this device, mounted on a special bracket to the tablet, you can scan the space at a distance of up to 3.5 meters, passing already built the model right on the screen.

Using the Structure Sensor, you can create a three-dimensional model of the space around and simulate the shape and appearance of real objects. The cost of the device starts at $379.

Investments in American developer Occipital — tenth the investment created by the CEO Mail.Ru Group Fund Grishin Robotics. The exact amount of investment was not disclosed, but a source in the press service Mail.Ru Group said that Grishin Robotics was the main investor in this round. Co-investors, in addition to the company Grishina, were Intel Capital, funds Shea Ventures and Foundry Group.

Equipment Occipital can be used in medicine, architecture and design, industry 3D printing in the field of visual effects and computer graphics — for example, to create 3D models of the premises, interiors and furniture. The device built-in sensor also allows you to scan objects for printing on a 3D printer.

The first version of the Sensor Structure team Occipital introduced in 2013. To create a series of devices Occipital collected on investment crowdfunding platform Kickstarter campaign has brought developers to $1.3 million from 3.5 million people.

A technological breakthrough in the field of computer vision opens new perspectives for the development of personal robotics”, quotes the founder of Grishin Robotics and CEO Dmitry Grishin in the official message of the company. According to Grishin, technology and products developed Occipital, closer to the time when “many devices around us will learn to better understand the environment and interact with it”.
