Brazil has blocked WhatsApp throughout the country for refusing to decrypt the messages

A Brazilian court ordered the telephone operators in the country to block the app for messaging WhatsApp for refusing to provide data to the police investigation.

“WhatsApp is blocked on the whole territory of the country”, told AFP a representative of the court.

In a 19-page ruling said that the Brazilian telephone operators are required to immediately suspend access to WhatsApp. If WhatsApp, the social network owned by Facebook, are not subject to the requirements of law enforcement, the company faces a fine of 50,000 reais (more than $15 000) per day.

This is not the first conflict of the Brazilian authorities and WhatsApp. From the beginning, the application has already twice blocked in the country, and in March the police even for a short time arrested the Vice-President of Facebook in Latin America.

According to local researchers, since that time, Brazil produced more than 100 million downloads of other instant messengers, which were especially popular Telegram. Observers believe that, as in previous times, lock WhatsApp will be cancelled a few days later. However, long-term inoperability of the service can affect users who will come to Brazil for the Olympic games.

According to media reports, Brazilian authorities are convinced that the messenger is used by criminals to exchange information on drug trafficking, and attempting to access the communications of suspects.
