Until July 2016, Microsoft allowed you to activate Windows 10 keys the old OSes. Then the opportunity was blocked. And now with the release of Update Creators the opportunity has again become available. To activate Windows 10, you must go to Settings –> Update and security –> Activate and enter activation key of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
Creators Windows 10 Update will not automatically pick up the activation key from a previous OS versions. Users must perform a clean installation of the operating system. Tellingly, if the user does not have the activation key, it is cheaper to buy the one for Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 than directly to activate Windows 10.
