This was reported today by Apple in the letter that the company distributed to authorized service centers. MacRumors confirmed the authenticity of this information, citing its own sources in ASTs. Most likely, this program is associated with large-scale replacements of worn out batteries which is simply not enough. Apple does not specify exactly which models of iPhone 6 Plus are subject to the program, and does not name the reason for replacement.
In a previous internal document received by MacRumors, says Apple no longer produces the iPhone 6 Plus. For this reason, the company will have to restart their production lines, which takes time. This is necessary in order to replenish the battery and indeed the device itself. Apple has not commented on the situation.
This is not the first case when from-for shortages of components Apple has to replace old devices with more modern. In the summer of 2017, the company launched the program, which replaced the 15-inch MacBook Pro 2012-2013 with a faulty battery on the newer models. The company explained this step by the temporary absence of the warehouse buildings with integrated battery for this MacBook, and promised to eliminate the deficit by September.
