Apple is working on a new generation of 3D Touch for large displays

Apple is working on a new display technology, which determines the pressure force on the screen, with the aim to transfer functional 3D Touch gestures on the iPad platform. Now 3D Touch works only on the iPhone 6s and not available on tablets because of the size of the screen.

“According to sources familiar with the situation, Apple fails to move the 3D Touch technology in its current form on larger displays, in particular on the 9.7-inch iPad Air. Source has repeatedly supplied truthful information about the company’s products, I learned that in Cupertino are working on a new technology that can determine the strength clicking on the screen, similar to that implemented in the iPhone 6s. But unlike the latter, they will be able to work with screens of the iPad Air, and iPad Pro and the future”.

According to informants, the new technology will support a variety of displays, including a 12.9-inch ‘professional’ iPad. However, its development has not yet completed, so the 3D Touch doesn’t appear in the iPad Air third generation. Expect a tablet with the touch sensitivity of the displays is not until 2016.

The current generation of 3D Touch-based technology Force Touch, first used in “smart” clock Apple Watch, and later appeared on the MacBook trackpad. However, if Force Touch uses a set of sensors placed around the screen, 3D Touch involved from capacitive sensors integrated with a backlit screen.

3D Touch on the iPhone 6s measures the distance between the flexible glass cover of the smartphone and the sensor array, displaying the data about the strength and location of each hit. The same principle will work and the next generation of 3D Touch.
