On the eve of the famous KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo made a statement which concerns new generation of Apple’s smartphone. He claims that the company from Cupertino for the first time in many years, intends to increase the display resolution of the iPhone.
According to him, the screen of the new iPhone 8 will occupy the whole front side of the device, its overall diagonal is 5.8 inches at a resolution of 2800 x 1242 pixel, that is, 521 ppi. The density of the current 4.7-inch iPhone 7 is about 320 ppi at a resolution of 1334 x 750 pixels.
The main display new items probably will have a diagonal of only 5.15 inches at a resolution of 2436 x 1125 pixels, while the remainder will be reserved for the virtual buttons. The density of pixels per inch in this case is 512 ppi, even higher than the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus (401 ppi). If we assume that the number of pixels, the resolution for the primary screen of the iPhone 8 will be twice more than the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone 7.
Previously, Apple refused from the transition to retina displays. The company claimed that higher resolution compared to what is already used now is not as important as battery life. While Android manufacturers have pursued ultra-high resolution, widely moving from Full HD to 2K, in Cupertino decided that smartphones with screen size up to 6 inches is sufficient for Full HD.
More pixels on the screens of smartphones are not necessary for several reasons. First, on such a small display, the human eye in most cases does not distinguish between image detail to a degree to offer a resolution above 1080p. Second, for ultra-high resolution available, not so much ready-made content for 1080p. And third, Apple thinks that as it is the time of the smartphone is more important than the number of points on the screen.
What made kupertinovtsy to reconsider this decision, is unknown. Maybe it’s the VR technologies that require high pixel density. In any case, the transition at 2K will result in the need to adapt games and apps in the App Store under ultra-high resolution.
