Apple and IKEA have submitted an application for fitting furniture through augmented reality

IKEA, in conjunction with Apple is working on a mobile application for iOS devices before purchase to see how the furniture will look like in a home environment. This was stated by the head of IKEA on digital technology Michael Voldsgaard.

“This is the first augmented reality app that will allow before buying to choose the furniture for the interior in the house”, – said the Manager of Inter Ikea Systems, which owns the IKEA brand.

The AR app will be the first that will allow you to try on in augmented reality arrangement of furniture in the apartment on the screen of the iPhone and iPad . Later through the app you can order the furniture.

According to Voldsgaard, Apple interest to this project due to the desire to reveal the possibilities of technology, ARKit introduced in iOS 11.

“First, our company has great stock of 3D models used in the furniture catalog. And, secondly, it allows you to visually demonstrate the capabilities of the AR beyond the gaming world,” he said.

The initial collection will be 500-600 pieces of furniture for the fitting. In the future, after the new samples, they will appear in the augmented reality application.

The app will be released in the fall of 2017 with the release of iOS 11.
