5G is already on the threshold

Qualcomm, ZTE and China Mobile tested the 5G network NR. The new system allows you to achieve data transfer speeds exceeding 1 Gbps.

First, let’s understand the history of the development of mobile communication technologies.

The first standard or the first generation of mobile communications — 1G — appeared in 1981. The speed of data transmission in this network ranged from 2.9 Kbytes/s to 5.6 Kbytes/s. Then he was replaced in 1992 came 2G. Innovations this technology has become a digital data encryption, the ability to send short text messages (SMS) and multimedia messages (MMS). The rate rose to 19.5 kBit/s, which was comparable to the rate of fixed points in the mid-90s. 2G Network is still used in many parts of the world. Later, the job was introduced two add-ins — 2.5 G (GPRS) and 2.75 G (EDGE). They increased the speed of data transfer up to 115 kbit/s GPRS up to 474 kbit/s EDGE, and to optimize the performance of mobile devices in the Internet. The 3G standard was announced in 1998, but he would put into a commercial use and became available only in 2001. He opened the access to such services like fast mobile Internet (384 kbps), video calls and mobile TV. In 2008 it was replaced by the fourth generation mobile communication — 4G (data transfer rate has reached 1 Gbps). Especially popular this standard started to use in 2011-2012. It is now used by most mobile operators.

5G is being developed the fifth generation of mobile communications. Currently, the platform for full deployment of 5G networks don’t exist.

Alliance mobile next generation networks (NGMN) brought a list of 8 requirements that must be met by 5G standards:

  • Network bandwidth in open areas from 1 to 10 GB/s;
  • Delay data transfer rate to 1 MS in both directions;
  • Support for simultaneous connection of up to 1000 devices an area of 1 square kilometer;
  • Simultaneous connection of from 10 to 100,000 devices;
  • Availability — 99.999%;
  • 100% coverage;
  • Reduce energy consumption up to 90% when using a network;
  • To 10 years of Autonomous operation for low-power devices.
  • According to representatives of NGMN, 5G network for the business audience and the everyday user needs to be deployed by 2020.

    New technology allows you to transfer data at speeds up to several gigabytes per second with a latency of less than 4 milliseconds. Such indicators allow online to broadcast video with a resolution of 8K (Ultra HD). The delay in 4G network today is more than 20 milliseconds. All three companies will effectively cooperate on the implementation of the 5G standard, and about their experience they will tell at the world partner conference, China Mobile, which will be held on November 23 in China. It is expected that the tests will continue next year.

    Japanese Telecom Corporation SoftBank is already testing 5G communications in Japan, planning to launch the first services by 2020.
