When the iPhone will be removed at the level of SLR cameras?

The Google engineer Florian Kainz, using conventional smartphones, has managed to achieve results comparable to those which it is capable of SLR cameras. Sold to developers, the technology can be used in smartphones next generation.

iPhone and other modern smartphones are capable of doing decent photos after sunset, but due to noise and blurring of images still can’t compete with digital SLR cameras. Kainz found a way to fix this problem.

On its website, the engineer described the results of the experiment, during which he managed to radically improve the photographic capabilities of smartphones when shooting in low lighting conditions.

Night photography is one of the weaknesses of mobile cameras. Not being able to affect the hardware component of their work, Kainz tried to solve this problem programmatically. Its main idea is to make a large number of photos of the same scene, and then delete the resulting images contain noise. Written application is up to 64 frames in a short time, the images are analyzed for undesired movements, cleaned from noise and combined into a single image.

The output Kainz received images are very high quality, unusual for mobile cameras.

Thanks to the technology developer was able to take photos with good exposure, natural colors and virtually no noise. All this in extremely dark conditions. The technology also compensates for the twitching of a smartphone while driving, so carrying around a tripod is not necessary.

While development is not practical, as it requires a lot of superfluous action, and the resolution of images obtained is not as high as in the case of SLR cameras. However, Kainz sure that all these shortcomings can be eliminated by writing the appropriate software algorithms.
