“VKontakte” apologized to users for a large-scale malfunction

Social network “Vkontakte” commented a serious failure of its services on August 4. The main cause of problems in a company called double trouble — the breakage of communication lines between data centers and the failure of the system to automatically switch to a backup route.

“A fatal combination of factors led to the accident of this magnitude, restore stable operation after which even the engineers “In touch” with their experience in emergency response situations took a few hours: our experts had to restore one by one the hundreds of services that work on tens of thousands of servers,” he described the network of the incident that occurred on 4 August.

The reason for the failure of the social network called breakage of communication lines between data centers “Vkontakte”, which was accompanied by the failure of the system to automatically switch to a backup route.

In order to avoid similar incidents in the future, the social network has promised to upgrade the system redundancy of network equipment, and fiber optic lines”. Also, the engineering team is already working “on improving the fault tolerance of the service to fully cope with the increased level of stress and possible emergency situations on the equipment of the social network and its suppliers”.

“We sincerely apologize to our users for the inconvenience”, – said the representatives of “Vkontakte”.

Desktop and mobile versions were inaccessible to users worldwide with 16:51 Moscow time. Users complained about difficulties with access to social networks and the Snapster lenses, created by the developers of the company. Crashing was celebrated around the world: mobile apps, counters, widgets, buttons, and the site appeared line: “the Requested page is currently unavailable”.
