Tele2 launches LTE network in St. Petersburg

Mobile operator Tele2 launches in June in St. Petersburg and Leningrad region the network is in the range of LTE 1800 (Band 3). Talking about commercial exploitation. It will be a complete network covering the whole city and immediate surroundings.

Preparations for the launch of 4G service was launched in 2014. Last fall, Tele2 launched in St. Petersburg the third generation network (3G), up to this point the operator has provided services exclusively on 2G (GSM 900/1800 MHz). The emergence of mobile broadband has significantly reduced churn.

Even with the mobile assets of Rostelecom and Tele2 will be difficult to catch up with the “big three”, especially given that the operator does not provide services for Moscow, the most profitable market of the Russian Federation. To eliminate the backlog, it will take years, it is unknown how long the shareholders will be willing to support investments with a negative operating profit.

According to the program of capital construction of 3G networks over the next three years the company intends to build more than 80,000 base stations throughout Russia. How many base stations now, the operator does not disclose, but a person close to Tele2 reported that tens of thousands. According to reports, MTS has only about 100,000 base stations, “Beeline” — more than 70 000 not including LTE. MegaFon total number of base stations does not disclose, but informs that at the end of 2013 was 43 416 base stations of the third and fourth generations.

MegaFon does not speak, does the real threat of future construction Tele2. In the “Beeline” I think that the company best from the point of view of coverage dual-band LTE network in Moscow is a key market for all operators. MTS network is superior to Tele2 on the number of base stations at times and MTS continues aggressive construction, says the company.
