“Steve jobs”: a hero of our time

Biographical drama Danny Boyle’s “Steve jobs” entering the Russian screens – not the first film about the legendary, the visionary, the Creator of the Macintosh computer and the Apple founder.

Two years ago, Hollywood released the biopic about the Jobs under even more lapidary by the name of “jobs” (original jOBS, similar to an iPod). The film tells about the life of Steve jobs – was born, studied, went to India, he founded the company, got married and so on. It is clear that the fullness of life one person at 122 minutes can hold. But the illusion of this fullness there was than the movie did bring those jobs anyway interesting.

The current “Steve jobs” is quite different. Danny Boyle did not even pretend to make a film about life. Here this life is only material for a full-fledged tragedy, again under construction under the classical scheme – but not a Hollywood biopic, but rather a drama or Opera. The hero goes on a dangerous path – a hero loses on all fronts, but does not fall spirit, – the hero pursues the triumph and finds the forgiveness of all those who were harmed.

Three acts – three reference points that define the life of Steve jobs (Michael Fassbender): a presentation of his favorite brainchild, the Apple Macintosh PC in 1984; the disastrous presentation of project NeXT (after the controversial dismissal of Apple) in 1988; and the presentation of the most successful iMac (after returning to Apple) in 1998.

A hero of our time

All acts are one and the same characters: Joanna Hoffman (Kate Winslet), assistant jobs, his “work wife”; Steve Wozniak (Seth Rogen), who created the Apple I and Apple II, the Apple co-founder; Andy Herzfeld (Michael Stahlberg), a key developer of Apple; John sculley (Jeff Daniels), CEO of Apple, in 1993 it lost; Crisan Brennan (Katherine your Business), the former girlfriend of Steve jobs and mother Lisa; and Lisa herself (in her different ages have different girls), the first child of Steve jobs, which he doesn’t want to admit it.

As you can see, the list of stakeholders includes the people who have played in the life of jobs, not a smaller role, say, his wife Lauren Powell, 1998, who bore him three children, or Mona Simpson, sister of Steve jobs, whom he first met in 1986 (the echoes of this complex history in the film is). In this sense, the film cannot be taken as biographical. This is exactly what a real tragedy, Greek or Shakespearean is a poetic and poignant, a story about eternal values. It breaks the image of a technocratic genius and a brilliant self-made-man, whose head was spinning Macs, iPhones and iPads. “Steve jobs” invites the viewer something that is not waiting. What jobs hamlet? Or Macbeth. Or Oedipus Rex…

Oddly enough, this tragedy tells of the life of Steve jobs much more than any biopic, said Postimees. We’re not concerned with how the deceased was a genius (we heard), and how he was a man. Whether he was good or, on the contrary, have walked upon the heads and corpses? If faithful he was to his friends? The sacrifices was to make it happen?

All of this in the film. Jobs appears to us unvarnished. Control-freak, hungry for total control and spreading to those who do not obey his commands. Conceited egoist not to become “Man of the year” by the magazine “times” – the reason for the disorder. Crappy father, and then six-year-old reminding Lisa that she’s not his daughter, and in an interview claiming that her father can be 28% of Americans…

Betrayal and forgiveness

Wozniak asked jobs to say “thank you” to the team that designed the Apple II, jobs refuses: Macintosh more important to him. The Herzfeld can not establish a voice signal of a new computer – jobs promises to publicly humiliate him. And so on and so forth. By the middle of the film convinced that jobs was a real asshole. Was his objective greatness – or he’s just sold the public a beautiful image of yourself?

“I don’t understand, says at some point Wozniak. – You didn’t do anything! You cannot write a computer program. You didn’t set up their computers. The Apple II made I, Macintosh – Jeff Raskin. Why every day I read in the papers that you’re a genius?” – “It’s like an orchestra – meets jobs smug. – Musicians playing instruments, the conductor plays the orchestra. I play on the orchestra. And you’re just a good musician.”

All conflicts arising in the first act, is continued in the second and third. Around jobs, which at the time refused his mother and who grew up in foster care, there is a kind of quasimeme: Hoffman – conditional wife, John Scully is a conventional father, Lisa is the conventional daughter (almost to the last he refused to believe her). In the relationship with these three people, and my brothers-friends-enemies Wozniak and Herzfeld has everything – from love to hatred, from betrayal to forgiveness. Dialogue-the Duo of Steve jobs and Apple fired him from Scully in the second act reaches operatic heights: Fassbender and Daniels play mortally offended the son, and seeking the reconciliation of the father so that give you goose bumps.

The greatest irony here – the slogan of Apple “Think Different”, “Think different”: Steve jobs for 14 years remains the same, to think differently, he does not seem able. And only at the end of the third act occurs the appropriate rebirth of the hero. Until jobs comes what Wozniak says: “you Can be talented, and decent man.”

Yes, the “Steve jobs” there’s a real classical morality. And not so important, how it relates to the present jobs. For all to see.
