This platform dominates the PC world VR, and this trend will continue for some time. However, Valve is planning to shake this monopoly – the company plans to move its SteamVR platform on Mac and Linux.

At the conference Steam Dev Days, Joe Ludwig of Valve said that virtual reality must be open to innovation. The representative of the Valve showed a screenshot of SteamVR running on Linux and helmet HTC Vive.

To forget, however, that even after the introduction of support for Mac, VR applications for “Apple” platform is very little. Most for SteamVR at the moment only works with Microsoft DirectX API, which is exclusive to Windows.

To VR-the game went on the operating system, it needs to support graphics APIs such as OpenGL and Vulkan. Now such projects are very few, although the decision to open Valve SteamVR for other OS gives hope that in the future such applications will become more.

Earlier, in Oculus stated that while it has postponed plans to add support for Mac. “It all depends on Apple. If they ever release a good computer, we’ll do it,” said company founder Palmer Luckey. He said that he didn’t like the reluctance of cupertinos to use a productive gaming graphics cards in their computers: “you Can buy a Mac Pro for $6000 with professional AMD FirePro D700, but it still does not meet the recommended requirements for the Oculus Rift”.
