Samsung will help Apple to improve the performance of iPhone 7

This week Samsung announced that the mass production of 8-Gigabit memory chips type DDR4 (Double-Data-Rate-4) with DRAM process technology “10-nanometer class”. According to CNET, this memory can be used in the next generation iPhone, which will be presented this fall.

The memory chip is a transition to more advanced technological processes are needed for the same reason and mainframes: reducing the cost of production and energy consumption, increase the density and speed. Samsung technology uses 10-nanometer class in the production of microchips DDR4 capacity of 8 GB. Based on them will produce energy-efficient memory module that supports a high transmission speed (rated at 3200 Mbps).

I must say that the wording of the process “10-nanometer class” means that Samsung can use as a 10-nm process technology, and 19-nm process technology – nominally, they belong to the same “class”. According to some unofficial data, were used 18-nm process technology.

Samsung recognizes that progress required the company to overcome some technical barriers. For example, in the absence of equipment for lithography with superrigid ultraviolet (EUV), had to improve existing methods. Immersion lithography with the use of an argon laser, a four-fold use of templates and spraying ultra-thin dielectric layer – some of the innovations Samsung has managed to apply in the production of microchips DDR4 technology “10-nanometer class”.

In the end, the released memory is not only increased speed DDR4-2400 to DDR4-3200, but has reduced power consumption by 10-20% compared to similar chips from “20-nm generation.” Samsung is the only supplier of memory for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, which implements the technology 20-nanometer class.
