The debut of the first Apple smartphone with OLED-display – iPhone 8 – is expected in 2017. This time Samsung is planning to invest large sums in the development of production. According to media reports, the company plans to spend about 8 trillion Korean won ($6.8 billion) to increase production capacity by more than 50%.
Samsung expects to increase the number of produced OLED panels for 200 million units per year. She now produces annually 300 million OLED displays. Sources say that starting in 2017 the Samsung order Apple will ship 100 million 5.5-inch OLED displays for the new iPhone.
Besides the potential suppliers of Samsung OLED panels for the next-generation iPhone is called the LG Display and JDI. Other smartphone makers, including Chinese brands, it is now also increasingly used in their new devices AMOLED displays.
Last week it became known that Samsung Display controls 95% of the market of OLED panels. In the first quarter of 2016, she put 86.7 million from 91.3 mln OLED displays that were released during this time. On the second place after Samsung, LG Display is located, a subsidiary of Korean giant LG.
The possibility of increasing investment in the production of OLED panels is also considered and AU Optronics (AUO). The company plans to invest in research and development and scale-up production of OLED panels. CEO of AUO, said that right now OLED panels are mainly used in the flagship models of smartphones and they are unlikely to completely replace the LCD screens in the next 2-3 years.
