OS X 10.10.4 brought support TRIM for third party SSDS

Modern operating systems support special TRIM command to the ATA interface, which is used when deleting files on SSD. This allows more efficient use of the SSD, which ultimately has a positive effect on the speed of the drive and at the time of his life.

OS X still was no exception, supporting the TRIM command only drives their partners, initially used in the Mac. When changing drive was purchased independently SSD users to activate the TRIM had to use third-party solutions.

Update OS X Yosemite 10.10.4, released Tuesday night, adds a command line utility trimforce that activates TRIM for third party SSDS. After using a computer restart is required. Technology support, we note, is present in the “operating systems” Microsoft starting with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008.

TRIM allows the operating system to notify the SSD controller about which data blocks are not used and can be deleted. This gives the drive the ability to avoid overwriting process data that is marked for deletion. Together with the garbage collection function is intended to improve the performance of storage devices and to reduce their wear.

It is worth noting that owners of drives from Samsung and Crucial, there may be some problems, as trimforce supports all models and may lead to data corruption.
