MTS is negotiating with Apple about the launch of Wi-Fi calls in Russia

In 2017, the operator plans to launch Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE in Saint-Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnodar, Nizhny Novgorod and Vladivostok. It is reported by RBC with reference to the Vice-President of the company. Currently, MTS is negotiating with Apple on support for the technology in the iPhone.

Wi-Fi calling allows you to receive calls on a smartphone and call with him where there is mobile network signal is weak or completely absent. For example, in the basement, stores and shopping malls, in trains and in the subway.

VoLTE, in turn, allows to improve the quality of the transmitted speech, to reduce the time a connection is established. MTS expects that the technology will eventually help relieve the 3G network, freeing up these frequencies for refarming and run them on LTE networks.

Currently two technologies available to MTS subscribers in Moscow and Moscow region. In 2017, Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE, MTS will appear in St.-Petersburg, Krasnodar, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Vladivostok. In 2018, the year to launch commercial operation of Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE in all regions of presence.

At the moment, the option of Wi-Fi Calling available only to owners of Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. Soon this list will be expanded, as told in MTS. Wi-Fi Calling should work on devices, ASUS, Alcatel, HTC, Sony, ZTE and LeEco. According to him, MTS is negotiating with Apple. The operator is technically ready to activate Wi-Fi Calling on the iPhone, “the question is on the side of the Apple brand”.

Also this year, residents of Saint-Petersburg, Krasnodar, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk and Vladivostok, will be available to own messenger operator MTC Connect, which allows you to call via Wi-Fi network, LTE or 3G, make video calls, chat in chat rooms etc. Now the service is available only to residents of Moscow.
