Marshmallow: Google chose the name for Android 6.0 [video]

Google officially announced the name of the next version of the Android operating system. According to the company blog, the new platform will be called Marshmallow (“Zephyr”).

Number operating system will become 6.0. Along with the announcement of the name of the system Google has also made available a Toolkit for Android developers SDK 6.0 and announced API version 23.

In may, Google introduced a new version of Android M in the conference for developers Google I/O. Vice-President Sundar Pichai then outlined the six main directions of the new system, including control of application access to certain system functions, a fingerprint scanner, a system of Internet of things and the photo service. It was noted that users will get access to the Android M in the third quarter of 2015.

The first version of Android was released on 23 September 2008 and was called Astroboy, and followed with 1.1 — Bender. From the names after famous robots subsequently had to be abandoned because of disagreements with the owners. Version 1.5 was named Cupcake, the following versions were also called sweets Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean. The most up to date version — 5.x — is called Lollipop (“Lollipop”).

Earlier observers accurately predicted the names of the following versions of Google OS (thanks to the leaks, internal sources or open the hints). After Android 5.0 expected output Android 5.2: some analysts spoke of “stagnation” in the development of the OS and the need for more significant changes, and therefore the next “major” version numbers.

The release date of Android 6.0 Marshmallow for user devices Google has not announced yet.
