Mac Pro 2016 release can get new 22-core Intel Xeon

In 2013 Apple released a new generation of professional workstations Mac Pro processor-based Intel ® Xeon processors. If this year the company will update the car, as they say informed sources, the computers can obtain new Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4, consisting of 22 CPU cores architecture Broadwell. At the moment, Apple offers the Mac Pro in the maximum configuration with 12-core processor.

In the family of E5-2600 v4 presents one model with 22 cores — CPU Xeon E5-2699 v4. Base clock is at 2.2 GHz, cache memory — 55 MB, and the average power consumption (TDP) — 145 watts. With the support of Hyper-Threading, a single processor can perform parallel 44 thread.

8-core Haswell-E consumes 140 watts, but operates at a frequency of 3 GHz and supports overclocking. Price Xeon E5-2699 v4 is $4115 $187 for the core. OCTA core chip Core i7-5960X costs $1059 ($132 for the core).

The Xeon processors are meant for servers, but are sometimes applied in systems and consumer. In addition, Apple uses them, for example Falcon Northwest. Last year the company released Tiki gaming computer with Intel Xeon E5-2699 v3 with 18 cores, and Boxx with two such processors.

AMD plans to soon release processors Zen, which can be up to 32 cores. However, observers believe that the competition on the number of cores between Intel and AMD will be limited to the server segment.
