Disk utility macOS High Sierra reveals passwords

Developed by Brazilian Matheus Mariano discovered a fairly serious security vulnerability in macOS High Sierra.

The vulnerability reveals the passwords of any APFS encrypted volumes.

According to the developer, if you start earlier APFS encrypted volume in Disk utility and click “Show hint”, instead of a hint, the system will show the passwor d in text form.

The problem only affects Macs with solid state drives. It is unclear whether this is a mistake most Disk utility or system-wide vulnerability that can reveal the password by other means.

I do not recommend you upgrade until Apple will solve this problem, says Matheus.

He reported their findings to Apple. Likely, the company will release an update that fixes this error soon.
